Fresh Cuts, September 24 - 30, 2006:

Karan Casey - Chasing The Sun

Feature Album:

Karan Casey - Chasing The Sun

Scott's Blog Notes:  Karan Casey released her first solo album "Songlines" in 1997, and also served as the lead singer of Solas (on the albums "Solas" [1996], "Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers" [1997], & "The Words That Remain" [1998]).  She returned to her solo career with the album "Seal Maiden" (2000), followed by "The Winds Begin To Sing" (2001), "Distant Shore" (2003) and her most recent, which we feature here, "Chasing The Sun" (2005). Karan wrote or arranged most of the songs on this album, and performs them with her elegant vocal style.  I've saved the "knockout" (my choice for the most hauntingly beautiful) track for last here, "The World Looks Away," but the entire CD is itself a beautiful work to enjoy many times over.  Also, more from recent featured artists Kim Robertson & The Poozies.

Fresh Cuts, September 10 - 23, 2006:

The Poozies - Raise Your Head

Feature Album: The Poozies - Raise Your Head (A Retrospective)
Scott's Blog Notes:  The Poozies were originally formed around Mary Macaster and Patsy Sedon (who record as Sileas) joining with then soloist Sally Barker, and shortly after that Karen Tweed.  Sally Barker left the lineup in 1996 and Kate Rusby joined up for a short stay, later replaced by Eilidh Shaw. This compilation, "Raise Your Head [A Retrospective]" covers some of each ere -  the Sally Barker led Poozies, the Kate Rusby era Poozies, and the Eilidh Shaw era Poozies.  Kate Rusby is generally regarded as the "strongest" lead vocalist of the group, given her powerful delivery combined with her notable solo career, but don't take that to mean that Sally Barker's original vocals are weak or less impressive.  Sally's voice is higher and more delicate than Kate's, but comes through with an emotional power in a few of their more memorable songs, probably the most significant of which leads off our feature set here.

1. The Poozies (1993) - We Built Fires - Chantoozies / Raise Your Head (A Retrospective)
